sick

Hey Ms. Jones,
i have been battling some sort of sickness, most likely just a sinus infection or something ( although my mom jokes about the swine flu---- yeah right), since last Thursday and am still not feeling better. Although i am becoming very friendly with Tylenol Cold medicine, my body is still having trouble "stabilizing." I know that i missed your class today, and i wanted to see if you could either e-mail.. if possible..... or post what i missed in class. i would like to say that i will be in class tomorrow, however the likely hood is looking slim. I am going to try and stop by tomorrow to get any assignments, as well as to turn in my synthesis essay and my question in regards to Fallen Angel. Just thought that i would let you know ahead of time so that you do not think that i have gone "fishing." Thanks so much!

SM

OK miss jones before i forget i want to just get it on here so then if i forget to ask you in class (for the 3rd day in a row) that it will be on here.

The beach clean up is saturday from 10-12. What do we need to do about gloves and trash bags and are you attending?

Tuesday, April 21, 2009

So. I was thinking. How would you guys feel if I typed up some of your essays and then as a class if we looked at them and gave feedback. This would be done anonymously (not the feedback but no one would know whose essay it was unless you volunteered that information). Would you be down to try it? I realize that this takes some bravery because if someone says something about your essay, you might take it personally, but you also will get sincere feedback and I think if the class knew the essay belonged to someone sitting in the room, they might be more constructive with their criticism. I just want you to see what your peers are accomplishing (as well as struggling with). Tell me what you think.

I will have your essays (synthesis) to return to you tomorrow. I only have four left to grade and I can handle that before tomorrow's class.
We have 22 days until the AP Exam. It really is pretty close.

HW Study for vocabulary quiz and make sure your vietnam projects are ready to go.

Wednesday, April 15, 2009

HW: Continue working on your Vietnam projects. Make these interesting. What do you peers want to know and how would they like you to present it?

Tuesday, April 14, 2009

HW: FALLEN ANGELS

To preface your reading of Walter Dean Meyers’ Fallen Angels, you will be completing mini-research projects on topics related to Vietnam and this novel.
Ø Walter Dean Meyers (Allison and Valerie)
Ø Map of Vietnam (include Chu Lai, Tam Ky, Tan Son Nhut, Song Nha Ngu River (Casey and Brandon)
Ø Causes and Effects of Vietnam War (make this clear and concise) (Ally and Julian)
Ø US Protests of Vietnam War (cover soldiers’ views as well) (Andrew and Kathryn)
Ø Race issues affecting US Soldiers in Vietnam (changes in the drafting process) (Chelsea and Landen)
Ø Health problems facing American soldiers in Vietnam (include Agent Orange and napalm, physical and mental health issues (PTSD), homelessness) (Sarah and Raleigh)

Each of your presentations needs to be interesting and informative as well as visually appealing. You will have one FULL BLOCK (Wednesday) to work on this and then you will present them Thursday after your synthesis timed write. You will present in the order the topics appear on this list.

Tonight's assignment: Find at least ONE source and PRINT IT OUT about your assigned topic. You only have one block to do this project, so if you have a light load tonight, I would do some internet surfing. Cowabunga dude.

pink eye

i would just like everyone to know. pink eye sucks.

Monday, April 13, 2009

HW: Have your vocab ready to review tomorrow and write an explanation of one example from the synthesis essay packet.

We are about to start reading Fallen Angels; just an FYI. We will do a little mini-research about Vietnam related issues and then we will start reading.

Timed Write this week: Probably Thursday and it will be a synthesis essay. Next week's will probably be a persuasive and a synthesis. Then I will add back in the rhetorical analysis.

take a minute and gimme thoughts on this please.

Dear Mister Smarmy,

I am so very deeply apologetic that you feel a sense of rage and frustration with Thomas Swift’s A Modest Proposal. I can obviously see why you might feel this way towards a piece with such potentially offending language such like this text exemplifies, yet I believe the reason that you’re distraught is the fact that you have slightly misinterpreted the original message that Swift was intending to convey. The literary form the Swift used is called a satire, which by definition of the Merriam Webster’s Dictionary is: “A literary composition, in verse or prose, in which human folly and vice are held up to scorn, derision, or ridicule”. This is also exactly what he did; Thomas Swift examined the indecencies that are displayed from Englishmen, and landlords unto the Irish settlers. We learn this through his use of specific sarcasm just exactly how the Irish were being treated. Many Irishmen worked farms owned by Englishmen who charged high rents—so high that the Irish were frequently unable to pay them. Consequently, many Irish farming families continually lived on the edge of starvation, and through this problem sparked what we see as Swift’s “solution” to the troubles. He states that the (English) landlords “have already devoured most of the parents, [so they] seem to have the best title to the children” (para.12). Thomas Swift is not actually proposing a new generation of cannibalism, he is simply using outrageous irony and sarcasm in order to shed light on the harsh conditions that his Irish (Catholic) people have to endure on a daily basis, and hoping through use of these exorbitant words that the reader can see these unfavorable conditions, and if not help with the problem, at least understand and sympathize with these peoples struggles. So once again, I am terribly sorry that you have failed to see the true meaning of this essay, and do hope that with this added insight that you might be able to change your opinion from one of hate, to complacency, or even admiration for his writing style. I hope this letter will bring you some closure on the subject, and if you have further questions regarding this material or any future problems please feel free to contact me personally or any other member of the Jebidiah School Board.

Best Wishes,

Fredrick F. Farquarie

How's Spring Break going? I am LOVING the time off.

I have:

Given myself a pedicure with a cute new lilac/lavender polish.
Taken my dog to the dog park, for a walk around the neighborhood, to Ogden Park, and to Poplar Grove on the nature trails (where I saw a black sheep).
Cleaned my house. Like severely. It needed it.
Gone to lunch with teacher friends.
Visited non-teacher friends.
Read a few hundred pages in my book (The Given Day-Dennis Lehane-he wrote Mystic River and Gone baby Gone)
Watched Twilight and the first season of Weeds. My sister recommended it and it is actually pretty good.
Caught up on all the stuff I had DVRed (soap operas, Operation Repo, The Real World, 30 Days, and other crap).
Slept. A lot.
Went on the Azalea Festival Garden Tour with my mommy. Pretty flowers.
Planted an herb garden (sage, basil, lemon balm, parsley)
Planted a flower pot (snapdragons)
Shopped for spring clothes/makeup (wasn't entirely successful but I found a few things)

STill to do:

Manicure (with same polish)
Go to school and see what kind of state (disaster) my room is in since the whole spring cleaning team (do you read the newspaper?) came in.
Sleep some more.
Clean some more.
Spend some more time with my dog and friends and mom and sister.
Grade your persuasive timed writes.
Make an easter basket for my best friend. It's a tradition.
Read some more.

How 'bout you?
